People of POLWEL: Nicolas Leung, the Man Behind Our Daily Retail Operations

From graduation parades to community carnivals, SGPoliceGifts has become a familiar and well-loved presence at SPF events. But behind the seamless setups and eye-catching displays is a dedicated team working hard to make it all happen.

Say hi to Nicolas Leung! As the Assistant Manager of POLWEL’s Retail Business Unit, Nicolas is a true multitasker. He oversees the day-to-day retail operations — from order fulfillment and inventory management to planning roadshows and liaising with various stakeholders. On top of that, he is also involved in product development and launching new merchandise.

We caught up with Nicolas to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes.

Nicolas works closely with the Retail Assistant to ensure smooth operations at the souvenir counter in the Police Heritage Centre.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

My day usually starts with routine tasks such as processing orders from our online store, checking inventory levels and coordinating with different stakeholders. Beyond the backend logistics, I also help with event planning and work closely on the merchandise production process. We occasionally get walk-in customers too – both officers and members of public looking to purchase gifts and souvenirs.

“No two days are ever the same, and that’s what keeps the job exciting!” Nicolas says with a grin.

A key part of Nicolas’s responsibilities is inventory management such as stock-taking and resupply.

What are some challenges you have encountered in running the retail operations?

Retail operations can be fast-paced and unpredictable. A major challenge is maintaining stock accuracy, especially after large-scale events where there is significant stock movement. We also get urgent customisation requests from officers – for example, personalised inscription plates for diecast collectibles as graduation or farewell gifts.

Sometimes, there are shipment delays or sudden changes to event logistics and we have to respond quickly without compromising business operations and services.

Nicolas shares how his Muay Thai training helps him manage such situations: “The focus required during training promotes mental clarity and emotional control under pressure.”

How do you choose which events or locations to bring SGPoliceGifts to?

It’s never decided on a whim – we consider factors like the event theme, expected turnout, relevance to our target audience and whether the logistics are feasible. Events like SPF units’ in-service sessions, Family Day carnivals, graduation parades of Police trainees and community outreach initiatives provide great opportunities to connect meaningfully with our members (SPF officers) and their families.

These events also give us a chance to hear feedback from our members. Sometimes, they suggest product ideas or ask if certain items can be restocked — we really value that input and act on it.

What is your most memorable moment?

Among the many roadshows and events, one moment that stands out was during an SPF event where a young boy — the son of a Police Officer — beamed with joy when his father gifted him the Police teddy bear plushie purchased at our booth.

Seeing these positive responses reminded me that we’re not just selling products. We’re creating joyful moments and fostering meaningful connections between them and SPF.

There are over 60 products. If you had to recommend just one, what would it be?

That’s a tough one but I’d go with the 1:24 SPF Tactical Vehicle Diecast Collectible. It’s big, red, unique and instantly recognisable. It appeals to both collectors and families as it’s one of the most iconic police vehicles on our roads. Plus, it’s a limited edition diecast model manufactured by a diecast specialist.

So, what’s next for the Retail Business Unit?

There’s plenty on the horizon. We are expanding our range with new lifestyle products and gifts for children. And of course, we are gearing up for the Police Community Roadshow later this year, where we’ll be setting up a booth to bring SGPoliceGifts even closer to the community!

Are you planning for an upcoming celebratory event or community outreach activity? Let us bring the SGPoliceGifts experience to your officers and families! Contact us at retail@polwel.org.sg – we’d love to be part of your event.
